| From 1990 to 1996 |

To accommodate the growth of their Caribbean Hub. American Airlines completed its second major expansion at the Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport, in Carolina Puerto Rico in 1987. MGA’s main task was to provide an integrated addition to the existing facilities providing expanded holdroom capacity, and a new third level sterile corridor so all gates could be used for dual international and domestic arrivals. This provided American with total of fifteen widebody gates from the previously existing nine gates.

The collapse of Eastern Airlines provide the opportunity for American Airlines to expand its cargo operations in Puerto Rico. Existing facilities were expanded to double their original capacity using areas formerly occupied by Eastern, this allowed increasing and consolidating the areas of customer service, offices, support, storage and material handling into one totally remodeled state of the art facility, the largest in Puerto Rico.
